Koteshwar HEP, located approximately 22 km downstream of Tehri Dam, is an integral part of the Tehri Hydro Power Complex (2,400 MW). The project comprises a 97.5 m high concrete gravity dam across the River Bhagirathi and a surface powerhouse equipped with four 100 MW Francis turbine-generator units.
Commissioned during 2011–12, Koteshwar HEP plays an important role in regulating releases from the Tehri Reservoir, maintaining downstream river flows for irrigation and ecological requirements, and supporting the safe flow of water through downstream locations including Devprayag, Rishikesh and Haridwar. Its reservoir also serves as the lower balancing reservoir for the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (1,000 MW).
